- Starting rate of pay: $25.10 per the Custodial Master Contract

Job Summary:
Under the direction of the Director of Facilities & Safety and guidance of the Director of Community Ed., the Community Center Custodian is responsible for the daily cleaning and maintenance activities within the building. Duties and responsibilities include monitoring and ensuring that established standards of cleanliness are maintained providing a safe, clean learning environment for students, staff, and faculty; operates and runs building boiler/HVAC equipment and systems.
- Sanitizes and cleans restrooms in accordance with assignments and cleaning schedules.
- Scrubs and sanitizes sinks, countertops, door handles, faucets, toilet flush handles, soap, and paper dispenser handles.
- Cleans, polishes and rinses chrome fixtures.
- Cleans and sanitizes toilet stools and urinals and makes sure they are operating properly.
- Cleans mirrors and window ledges.
- Scrubs and sanitizes restroom floors.
- Refills paper goods, soap dispensers and sprays deodorizers
- Provides cleaning services for classrooms, offices, cafeteria, kitchens, hallways, locker rooms, gymnasium, and all areas required in school building.
- Sweep, vacuum or mop floors and hallways daily. Cleans hallways, entryways, restrooms, locker rooms, classrooms or cafeteria.
- Dust mops or wet mops rooms and floors and classrooms, as necessary.
- Empties waste baskets and recycle baskets.
- Scrubs soap and towel dispensers, countertops and walls.
- Collects trash including milk cartons and cleans milk carton bins.
- Sanitizes countertops, sink, chairs, and desks.
- Cleans glass windows on doors daily.
- Cleans gymnasium(s).
- Vacuums carpets and entry mats.
- Cleans and disinfects spills and stains as required.
- Cleans hallways, entryways, restrooms, locker rooms, classrooms or cafeteria.
- Strips, mops, waxes, buffs and cleans floors.
- Performs general maintenance activities within the building.
- Identifies building problems, needs or issues and communicates with the Director of Community Ed., ALC Coord. Or Director of Facilities & Safety concerning facility needs or problems.
- Operates boiler and machinery in the building. Checks boilers and air handling units. Assists district maintenance technicians in the conduct of building maintenance repairs and activities, as needed.
- Monitors and checks building equipment.
- Makes adjustments due to weather conditions and other factors.
- Operates and maintains mechanical systems within the building.
- Maintains all logs and records required.
- Oversees the building security. Secures and opens up the building. Shuts off lights, closes windows, locks doors, sets building alarms.
- Coordinates and/or participates in the set up and take down of equipment and materials needed for scheduling building activities, meetings, community education classes, events or functions within the building. Provides assistance in unloading deliveries and/or food items to the building and in moving desks, furniture, and equipment within the building, as assigned.
- Coordinates and/or assists in cafeteria set up and cleaning. Cleans tables, floors and stores tables/chairs after use. Removes and empties trash.
- Coordinates, schedules and participates in extensive summer cleaning schedules, routines and projects in building preparations for the new year.
- Leads summer crews in the comprehensive cleaning of the building.
- Removes furniture from all classrooms; cleans sinks; washes walls and windows; strips and seal waxes floors.
- Shampoos all carpets.
- Paints lockers and classrooms.
- Participates in the cleaning of assigned classrooms, floors, offices, restrooms, gyms, hallways or other areas of the building to assure a safe and clean environment in which to learn and work.
- Collaborates and works with the Director of Community Ed., Supervisor of Buildings and Grounds, and Lead Custodians to identify special needs, projects or events that impact scheduling, work priorities, and workload requirements.
- Performs other duties of a comparable level or type, as required.
EDUCATION/KNOWLEDGE REQUIREMENT: Minimum education required to perform adequately in position could reasonably be attained only by completing the following:
- High school diploma or GED.
Essential knowledge and specialized subject knowledge required to perform the essential functions of the job:
- Knowledge of modern cleaning methods including basic methods of cleaning and preserving floors, carpets furniture, walls and fixtures.
- Knowledge of the use and operations of cleaning equipment, tools, materials and supplies used in custodial work.
- Knowledge of safety procedures related to blood borne pathogens, body mechanics, hazardous materials and chemicals, and confined spaces.
- Fundamentals of work coordination and direction.
- Knowledge of safe use and operation of boiler systems, security & fire system operation, and water treatment.
- Knowledge of district and department policies and procedures.
- Knowledge of Right-to-Know requirements
Required Work Experience in Addition to Formal Education/Training:
Minimum of 3 years custodial and or general maintenance experience
LICENSE/ CERTIFICATION:
Identify licenses/certification required upon hiring:

Upon Hire - Special Class Boilers License; MN Driver's License

Required within 6 months - Pool Operator License

Required within 1 year - Non-Licensed Electrical License

Required within 13 months - 2nd Class Boilers License

Required within three years and one month - 1st Class Boilers License
ESSENTIAL SKILLS REQUIRED TO PERFORM THE WORK:
Skilled in:
- Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with building administrators, building staff, students, and operations personnel.
- Leading, delegating and monitoring staff activities and functions to assure work standards and compliance with departmental work orders, schedules, and responsibilities.
- Operating, programming and maintaining energy management, boiler and HVAC systems, programs and equipment.
- Cleaning and caring for the appearance of building and ground areas and surfaces.
- Using tools, chemicals and cleaning equipment.
- Reading, understanding, and following safety procedures and written instructions.
- Using a variety of cleaning techniques utilizing appropriate chemicals and cleaning equipment.

Unusual or hazardous working conditions related to performance of duties:

Risk of exposure to communicable disease, blood borne pathogens, and other bodily fluids. Chemicals used in performance of the job pose potential risks for inhalation of fumes, chemical burns and skin absorption.
