We know that Hastings was home to a thriving black community in the 1870’s, yet 20 years later an arson at the local African American Episcopal Church went uninvestigated. A decade later, the KKK flourished in Hastings. Learn why Hastings’ racial history is not unique and why Loewen maintains that “telling the truth about the past helps cause justice in the present.” James Loewen is the author of titles such as Sundown Towns: A Hidden Dimension of American Racism, Lies My Teacher Told Me, and many others.
